Dr. Juan Manuel García started cochlear implants in Colombia in the 1990's. More than 550 patients have undergone the surgery and now have a very close to normal hearing and thus a normal everyday life.

How Does a Cochlear Implant Work? 
A cochlear implant bypasses the damaged cochlear hair cells and uses electrical impulses to stimulate the auditory nerve.  The goal is to restore sound detection and enable speech recognition.
